通識年賽於2007年創辦，目的是向全港中學推廣以研究為本的通識教育。
Established in 2007, the Annual Quiz aims at promoting research-based general education among secondary schools in Hong Kong.

自創辦至今，通識年賽獲超過100位大學教授熱心支持，擔任顧問和評判，累計評審數目超過5,000人次。
Since its establishment, the Annual Quiz has received encouraging support from over 100 professors to serve as advisors and judges, with over 5,000 cumulative adjudications.
通識年賽獲逾40個機構和單位全力支持，當中包括逾15個大學單位。
More than 40 organizations and institutions, including over 15 university units, have provided generous support to the Annual Quiz.
全港共有120多間中學參加過通識年賽，參與學生和巿民數目超過50,000人。
Some 120 secondary schools in Hong Kong have participated in the Annual Quiz, reaching out to over 50,000 students and members of the public.
