All lab members have access to the state-of-the-art High Performance Computing Environment (HPCE) through the P. G. Senapathy Computing Center at IIT Madras. The P. G. Senapathy Computing Center is home to two super-computing clusters: (a) Virgo cluster, and (b) GNR cluster. Essential software required for scientific computing are pre-installed and managed by a dedicated HPCE support team. A brief introduction to the HPCE, instructions on accessing the clusters, and best practices are provided here.
The Virgo cluster is expected to be the work horse for running large-scale simulations. Research group members are expected to utilize this cluster for their computing needs.
The Virgo cluster has 292 compute nodes. Each node has 16 cores and is equipped with a 2 X Intel E5-2670 8 C 2.6 GHz Processor. Each node also has 64 GB RAM with 8 X 8 GB 1600 MHz DIMM connected in a fully balanced mode. The total storage capacity of the system is 210 TB.
G. N. Ramachandran (GNR) cluster was set-up to be an educational platform for senior undergraduates, and master's students. The cluster aims to provide a gentle introduction to High Performance Computing (HPC) for beginners. Senior undergraduate students, Dual-degree students, and M. Tech. students pursuing their projects with the group are expected to leverage the GNR cluster to familiarize themselves with HPC.
The GNR cluster has one head node and 16 compute nodes. Each node includes an Eight-Core Intel Xeon Ivy bridge E5-2650v2 series processors with 4 X 8GB RAM. The total storage capacity of the system is 14 TB.
Lab members have access to high performance workstations for pre-processing, code-development, post-processing, and visualizing results. The lab members are expected to use these workstations for their research and running small-medium scale simulations. All essential software packages are pre-installed in the systems and support is provided as necessary. Back-up of system generated data is done periodically through a centralized system.
Members also have access to the computer facilities available within the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Madras. The Departmental Computing Facility supports 60 medium to high-performance personal computers. All essential simulation software are pre-installed on the systems. Any custom installations can be made upon request.
