Research

I am interested in applied social science research which:

  • helps recreation agencies make informed management decisions, and

  • increases both the academic and public understanding of the benefits of, and relationships between, active recreation behaviors in natural settings and the resulting human health outcomes.

In 2014, I was interviewed by the National Recreation and Park Association. This short magazine article describes more information about my academic training and experience.

Hernando, Mississippi Parks and Recreation

For my Master's research at the University of Mississippi, I conducted a community needs assessment for the municipal park and recreation provider in the City of Hernando, Mississippi. This partnership between the agency and the Department of Health, Exercise Science, and Recreation Management was a great service learning opportunity. The mentoring from my advisor, Dr. Kim R. Beason, working for a supportive mayor, Mr. Chip Johnson, and helping a passionate parks director, Mr. Dewayne Williams, all contributed to an amazing educational experience.

I am currently a PhD student at Texas A&M, working in Dr. Gerard Kyle's Human Dimensions of Natural Resources Research Laboratory. It is a huge honor be part of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at this wonderful university. I am immensely thankful for the daily intellectual challenge, and am part of a great cohort of future scholars.
