Malaysia has 18 species of non-marine tortoises and turtles, which belong to the suborder Cryptodira of the order Chelonia. These species are divided among three families, the truly terrestrial tortoise family, Testudinidae, the semi-aquatic pond turtle family Emydidae, and the aquatic softshell family Trionychidae. Their natural habitat is lowland and hill forests, rivers, estuaries and mangroves. However, due to deforestation, some lowland species have moved closer to populated areas.
