the ballade of a boy & the stars
Written for Noah Paul Mackie
On his four-month-old birthday
15 September 2009
Boy with eyes so blue and skin so fair
You gaze like many have gazed before
Gazing at Heaven and stars up there
You see your grandfathers by the score
You see past mothers look down with care
Brightly shine their eyes on clearest night
With a sparkle you smile and you stare
Oh, dear boy, let the stars guide your sight
Pegasus flying and Orion
The white horse soars, so does an arrow
The City on a Hill and Zion
Are beyond the realm of the sparrow
Dear boy keep your gaze straight and narrow
Mind the wonder found in the moonlight
Let dreams overflow the wheelbarrow
Oh, dear boy, let the stars guide your sight
Follow the falling star with your eye
Perhaps Orion's arrow just flew
Hop on the back of Pegasus. Fly!
Chase the star and become someone new
Many catch stars though only a few
Keep chasing stars to another height
When perfectly painting a star's hue
Oh, dear boy, let the stars guide your sight
So dear boy when you are old and gray
And I am no longer in the fight
I will look down from Heaven and say
Oh, dear boy, let the stars guide your sight
