STMicroelectronics (STM)

Biomedical Electronics

Signals detection, conditioning (analog filters and amplifiers), conversion (analog-to-digital), digital processing.

Sensors and signals

    • Voltage (electrocardiogram), impedance: heart/breath rate, muscolar activity
    • Acceleration 3-axis: heart/breath rate, physical activity, recumbency/sleep detection, fall detection, supine/sitting/standing/walking/run detection
    • Sound (digital stethoscope): heart/breath rate, voice
    • Light (red/infrared led+photdiode, photoplethysmography): heart/breath rate, oxygen saturation

Data integration/fusion

    • Merge same signal from different sources to get more reliable outputs (e.g. it can be done for heart/breath rate)
    • Compare different signals to enhance outputs and/or generate more outputs (e.g. does the heart rate match the physical activity? give warnings if not)

BodyGateWay (BGW)

It is an electronic sticking plaster with rechargeable battery, sensors, low power microcontroller and radio module (bluetooth).

It is placed on the chest, just above the sternum. The device learns the specific patterns of patient's signals during the calibration phase driven by an operator. Then the device identifies and tracks anomalies during the autonomous operational phase.
