Beyond Cape Town

Langa township sits just outside the glitz and glamour of Cape Town and many South Africans live in one of the many townships populated throughout the country. At first, I was a little hesitant to enter when I saw some of the living conditions and witnessed the harsher realities of inequality and poverty. Yet, I also discovered a deep and rich sense of culture, pride, community, and beauty, along with very friendly people.

This nice lady offered me goat liver and bread for a mid morning snack while she waited for the lunch rush. The painting symbolized to me the pain of South Africa's past, but also its resilience and hope for the future.
