Oil on Canvas

African Queen 1

African Queen 1 is part of a series of three paintings. In London, I had a wonderful opportunity to live and paint alongside one of my mentors, Rosa Branson, learning a classical approach to oil painting. Her first suggestion to me was to paint a still life. I had dreaded painting still life's in college because I had an instructor once stick a chair in the center of the room with whatever else was nearby and said, "paint it." This time, I was told to choose objects that meant something to me. I loved this idea. I had just returned from a trip to Africa and had collected a couple of mementos for this purpose. African Queen sculptures represent Africa to me, especially the strength and hard work of the women. To be a rebel I stuck my still life next to a window to incorporate a landscape. This one is looking towards the west, where I am from.
