At the beginning of our TRN year in March, the NICU NUM Alexis asked myself and the other two new graduates to do a presentation at the end of our TRN year, on whichever topic we liked.
As we started working on the ward, I (and the others) noticed how often we would get conflicting advice and information on how things are done in the NICU.
I came up with the idea to make a list of all these things throughout the year, and for our presentation, we could go through the policies and latest peer-reviewed research to find the actual answers to the various differing advice we were given.
Too often, nurses do things certain ways, not because of the latest evidence but because "that's the way we have always done it". However, medicine and nursing in particular, are ever changing professions, where new technology and research, provides us with better ways of doing things.
