Goal Setting & Goal Achievements

CPD Cycle - 4 stages

1. Identify knowledge gaps / goals

Short term:

• Complete all LDU/HDU packages & skills
• Care for babies in the LDU and HDU
• Become more confident caring for well babies on CPAP
• Gain more confidence with using the various IV pumps & caring for babies receiving IV therapy

Medium Term:

• Gain more confidence with IV medications & TPN/Lipids
• Learn how to set up the shuttle confidently
• Complete all ICU packages & skills
• Care for unwell babies on CPAP
• Gain more knowledge and skills with breastfeeding and teaching parenting skills
• Completing the post graduate course at UTS Graduate Certificate in Child and Family Health Nursing

Long Term:

• Care for ventilated babies
• Become confident with being admission nurse and attending births
• Become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant

2. Strategies to achieve learning goals

• Ask to be allocated to unwell babies with the guidance of a senior staff member or educator (when possible)
• Attend training courses
• Help other staff members when they are giving IV therapy and medications
• I do the skills myself with the supervision of a CNE/senior RN (rather than watching) and give me feedback
• Ask to attend more admissions with a buddy
• Ask the CNE to supervise me setting up the shuttle when the opportunity arises

3. Do the learning (with evidence certificates etc)

• I have completed all of my LDU/HDU packages
• I have completed all but one LDU/HDU competency
• I have completed several ICU learning packages and competencies
• I have been to 3 admissions (births), which I have progressively been more involved in
• I have undertaken a Lactation Skills Workshop and several online breastfeeding courses
• I have been accepted into the Graduate Certificate in Child and Family Health Nursing at UTS for 2019

4. Reflection - do you need to do more learning?

• I need to gain more confidence caring for well babies on CPAP
• I need to continue learning how to care for unwell babies on CPAP
• I am gaining skills with IV medications and therapy, but need more confidence, which comes with practice
• I need more hands on practice with being admissions nurse and setting up the shuttle
• I need to gain more theoretical knowledge and practical skills in breastfeeding
• I would like to begin learning the ventilators and how to care for ventilated babies
