Why should Americans, and in particular, youth, go abroad?
What am I required to do if I participate?
AmSS was designed knowing that teachers have very limited time. The structure and many pieces are already here for you and the student to choose from. The student is designing the study, and only needs a nudge here and there. Once more material is added to this site, your choice of actions can range among any of the following options:
Have a conversation with the student, discussing and approving (if appropriate) his/her study plan and the checklist of activities and investigations he/she presents to you, and checking later that it is complete according to the timeline you both agree on. You do not have to monitor the process, but may just look at the results and give the corresponding credit and grade at the end.
Agree to use the ambassador's communiques to enrich in your classroom
Suggest other alternatives from the website to add to his/her checklist.
Design an alternative course or course module with him/her to add to the website for future ambassadors. Of course this option has your name and your school on it.
Be on your student's "Home Team" and offer regular input and encouragement
Who pays for this?
Parents are fully responsible for travel and safety of their students, and sign a waiver to that effect. Since students will usually remain enrolled in your school, some the funds received due to that enrollment might be directed to people and resources that support that student and international studies in general. In Oregon, it is allowable for a student with Oregon residency to be enrolled in school while abroad if there are a minimum number of contacts per week made between school and student. (ORS ???) Your school may even attract more students, so adopting a student's independent study program might actually pay the school, and some of the funds coming to your school because of that ambassador's attendance can be directed towards empowering that student's study-service.
