Professional bio:
Dr. Alphan Şahin earned his B.S. degrees in electrical engineering and telecommunications engineering (double major) and his M.S. in electrical engineering from Istanbul Technical University in 2005, 2006, and 2008, respectively. Between 2006 and 2009, he was with the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), worked on FPGAs as a researcher, and designed hardware for information security. He earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL, in 2013. Later, he served as a postdoctoral research associate at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, and Florida International University, Miami, FL, before joining InterDigital in 2015. He focused on the IEEE 802.11 and 3GPP 5G NR standards while at InterDigital. He is currently affiliated with the University of South Carolina as an assistant professor. He is a recipient of the 2025 National Science Foundation CAREER Award. His research interests lie at the intersection of signal processing, communication theory, information theory, optimization, AI/ML algorithms, sequences, and number theory, with an emphasis on the physical layer of wireless networks.

Personal statement:
I like math, science, and nature, from bugs to sharks. I love discussions and learning from them. I love innovating as much as I can. My goal is to be a lifelong learner. I believe that happiness is in doing, not getting what you want, and I like getting my hands dirty. I like writing my own papers. I go and write my own code. I am passionate about what I am doing.
Announcements:
I will hire one fully funded Ph.D. student, starting in Fall 2026, as part of my NSF CAREER Project: Over-the-Air Computation - Turning Wireless Networks into Computing Networks (2025-2030).
