(The speech delivered by Mr. Alok Jatratkar as a Chief Guest at the inaugural ceremony of Indian International Model of United Nations (IIMUN) (Kolhapur Chapter) organized at KIT's College of Engineering, Kolhapur on 7th March 2015.)
Good Evening everyone!
I am very much delighted to be present at such a youthful and energetic gathering. I thank the organizers for giving me the opportunity to be here among you all. I welcome you all personally and on behalf of Shivaji University, also.
At the outset, I welcome the Kolhapur Chapter of IIMUN and wish them good luck. Also, I take the opportunity to congratulate every stakeholder of the KIT's college of Engineering for securing the 'A' accreditation from the NAAC, Bangalore. I am proud that you are the part of my University.
The Alumni of this college, and my friend Mr. Vinayak Pachlag told me that I should share few of my experiences that will enrich you. So, let us start with it and then we will come to the topic of the IIMUN.
Friends, during my 17 years of experience in the field of Journalism and Public Relations, one thing I have surely learned that if you are good, you appeal for the goodness of people, then the results are very much fruitful. I have worked in the corporate house like Sakaal Media Group and in the State Government of Maharashtra, as well. Another thing I can surely tell you that everything and everyone in the system is not, I repeat, not - corrupt. There is no any system, May it be Government or Corporate, may not be fully ideal, except the Mumbai's Dabbawalas. They had their own strengths and weaknesses. In public systems, lacs of persons are working together. Every person is a different entity here. Their own behavioral patterns matter in the system. Hence, the problems arise. Such misconducting persons are very few in number. But we usually judge the system upon those people only, doing injustice towards the large number of noble and dutiful people. I was the part of the Government system, and very responsibly I can tell you that everything happening there is not feeding up the corruption. Our decision makers always form policies only for the betterment of Society, of the Nation. I have never seen a single leader saying, चलो, ऐसी पॉलिसी बनाएँ, जिससे समाज की और देश की वाट लगे। No, my friends. The problem lies with the implementation level. We need reforms at that level. Every citizen of this country should decide that they would never bribe anyone. There are givers, hence there are takers. And we all have our own reasoning for that bribing. 'लाच नाही हो, असू दे चहापाण्याला.' else 'मुलांना मिठाई घेऊन जा.' and like that. I would like to give an example when Anna Hajare's agitation was on the peak of its popularity. That time, I was in Mumbai. Anna's supporters were agitating at Azad Maidan near CST station. I rushed out from CST to catch my office timing. A girl of your age was standing at the gate, distributing the Gandhi caps with 'I am Anna' written on it. She offered me with one. I asked, 'Why? What will happen if I wear it?' She replied, 'इससे भ्रष्टाचार कम होगा।' I again asked her, 'How?' and she had no answer. I asked her one question, 'Where do you learn? And which course?' She told me her institute's name and the course as MBA. I again asked her, 'On merit or donation?' She took her eyes away from me and I got my answer. I asked her to just introspect and started on my way.
My friends, not headgears, but the heads have the power to carry out the Change, they desire. One cannot be a part of change, unless being the part of system or at least knowing the system. If you really want the change, enter into the system, be the part of it and perform catalytic role towards the change. It is not the matter of some days, but of years. In that sense, such projects like IIMUN are really contributing at large, creating positive mindset of youth towards the system. For that I should really appreciate your efforts.
Another thing, from my experience, I wish to share is that any kind of skill plays very vital role in your career. My father was ready to take my admission to engineering from payment seat quota. But, I refused and told him that by paying huge amount I didn't want to become an engineer. Rather I will do Bachelors in Chemistry and I was confident that I was going to do better with my life. Also, I met a Professor at this University only who told me that I even have no capability to learn at the University. But, my friends, I learnt here, did my post graduation, won Gold Medal at both BJC and MJC courses. And now have become the first ever Public Relations Officer of the same University. It took me 15 years to achieve this. But with determination, anything is possible. And, you might wonder, that the professor, unaware of the fact I told you, is a very good friend of mine today.
I would also like to tell you, my criteria of success. It does not lie in money or any post. Wherever I join, I just look into the eyes of my parents and I can see glitter of my success there.
I was talking about skills. I had passion towards my journalistic & communication skills, and those skills gave me an opportunity to work in the media industry. I did not have to struggle or to wait for a single day to get a job. Thanks to the editing and writing skills, I had developed during my education. And later on, I kept on working to refine my skills, adopted newer techniques and avenues.
So, take my word and adopt, acquire any kind of hard or soft skill that will lead you to the better opportunities. The engineering, itself is a highly skilled job. Engineers are popularly called as the Nation Builders. And we have thousands of engineers passing out from our Institutes and still we are developing Nation. Why? Where is the problem? The problem is, we are considering our education as a medium of passing only, and getting a degree. After having degree, our real examination starts where we have to compete with thousands of degree holders. And there your skills will help you out, to identify you separately from them.
My friends, we are talking of Demographic Dividend, now and then. South Korea, Japan, China have enjoyed extensively their demographic dividend, and have established themselves powerfully on the map of the World. Now it is our turn. We have the highest youth population between the range of 15 to 59 years. The next 15 years are very crucial for us, as these years will decide whether India could be a super power or not? If we want to take our Nation on the higher stages of development, we have to take the challenge to train this young population. And, it is our duty also, not to wait for someone to come forward to train us. Let prepare ourselves to contribute to the Nation building process.
As you all know that recently our Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has delivered a strong message of 'Make in India'. It is very nice to attract the FDI's into our country. Those will create job opportunities also. But, they will be using - our infrastructure, our natural resources, our human resources and will be getting richer and richer. Yes, for creating job opportunities, it is fine today. They will contribute our foreign income, also. But, my suggestion to you is, whenever possible you adopt the policy of 'Made from India'. If possible, start your own business, though it may be small. But, that will keep our resources, money, man-power functioning for our Nation, only. The benefit from this will be higher and be appreciable. So think upon it. Give it a try.
Friends, now I turn towards the subject of the IIMUN. It is a very noble thought of Global Brotherhood. Today, there is a very unrest situation all over the globe. The terrorism has spread like nothing to every Nation. Though it has to do anything or nothing, every Nation, every citizen, is in the purview of terrorism. I have witnessed the 26/11 horror very closely; rescued very shortly from that firing of Kasab. We are seeing the massacre done, day to day by those terrorists. ISIS has found out new funda of man slaughtering. Even they are not making it an exception to the Journalists; rather the journos have become softer target for them to catch and kill. So, the unrest is spread all over. The humanity is in danger.
My friends, if I ask you, what the human history is consists of, I wonder what your answer will be? Is it of Peace? Or is it of culture? No my friends, it is made up of continuous riots and conflicts. Just recall your text books of history and you will agree with me. A little peace; and conflicts everywhere! The first thing created by the hominids was the axe like pebble of stone to get his food. And then human went on progressing. This progress is measured by Stone Age, copper age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. Means we judge our progress by various weapons, our forefathers created from time to time. Now, travelling through the ages of swords and cannons, we have reached up to the nuclear weapons. What a progress!
I would like to quote from a book 'The History of Human race' written by Dr. Henry Thomas. (I quote), "Human history resembles with the family, consisting all lunatics. A beautiful Palace they create tirelessly and destruct it within no time. It took us thousands of years to achieve the Cultural position, we have today. If we would have conflict-free history, it was the matter of only five centuries. Unless we eradicate those conflicts from the world, our real progress cannot even start." (Unquote)
The only good thing happened from those conflicts is that they have given us Bhagvan Buddha, Bhagvan Mahaveer, Mohd. Paigambar, Jesus, Mahatma Gandhi and all our saints, spreading the message of Peace and Non-Violence. Even United Nations is a product of the Second World War and that was the case with the League of Nations after the First World War.
The United Nations have very high humanitarian values in its mission. It had the aim of to save succeeding generations from the scourge of War. Its mission is to maintain international peace and security and to promote friendly relations among countries. The UN charter upholds human rights and proposes that states should work together to overcome social, economic, humanitarian and cultural challenges.
Theoretically it sounds great. But, from having glimpses of last 60 years, we may say that there are so many missing links. The UN is trying at its best, but there are forces working to destroy its effects. The Cultural imperialism from the developed countries over the developing and under-developed countries, is higher than never. The new LPG policies i.e. Liberalization, Privatization and Globalization are fuelling this divide very strongly. This divide is not only of the Digital, but also of Socio-economic divide. How can we bridge this gap globally, is the question of time. It is said that the third world war will be caused by the scarcity of water and other natural resources. I expect you all to come to a solution required to save our mother earth.
My friends, recently our Prime Minister Mr Modi has said that he has only one religion named India and Constitution is its only religion-book. Likewise, at the global level, let the Humanity be our only religion and the UN Charter be its only religion-book. I expect the high spirited contributions, discussions from all of you during this three day Conclave.
My special request to the Security Council of IIMUN is that to consider India's permanent membership sympathetically, as China and Russia have soften their stand and shown their inclination in favour of India. And showing my full support to the Indian delegation, I request them to play their role dynamically to convince France, US and UK, in this regard.
I am sure that your efforts will definitely be counted towards the betterment of Humanity; else we, humans are ready with so much nuclear weapons, so that we can destroy our Mother Earth not once but, at least five hundred times.
I extend my well wishes for the success of this conclave of IIMUN, congratulate IIMUN Kolhapur Chapter and thank the organizers for inviting me, once again.
Thank you, one and all.
