Harmful Algal between Mooney Mooney bridge and Bar/point Coba Bay

Post date: Jan 29, 2018 4:30:13 AM

24 Jan 2018 - This is a precautionary notification alert. High levels of harmful algae, Alexandrium minutum, have been collected in the area between the Mooney Mooney freeway bridge and Bar Point/Coba bay. Toxicity related to this algae species to humans is generally via consumption of seafood (shellfish, crabs, squid, octopus, fish). A slight red discoloration of the water has been seen from Wisemans Ferry to the freeway bridge. It is advised that contact with the water where discoloured should be avoided. This is due to concerns that the health impact of this toxic species to swimmers is largely unknown. Shellfish should not be taken from the discoloured area and fish should be gutted and cleaned thoroughly. For more information call the algal bloom hotline on 1 800 999 457
