I was born in the town of Kerkyra where I lived until my graduation from the high school.
Originally my father is from Argyrades (a village in the southern part of Kerkyra) and my mother from a small village, called Neraida, in Peloponnesse close to Ancient Olympia.
My father was working as a teacher of mathematics for over 28 years and my mother was a lawyer.
I have one younger brother (Andreas) who is a medical doctor and he lives in England.
Since I was a child, I wanted to understand the mathematical equations that my father was explaining to his students and find relevant applications. Therefore, I decided to study in the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki where I graduated in September 2007.
Being curious to live abroad after my graduation I moved to London. Between 2007 and 2008 I obtained an MSc degree from Imperial College London in Communications and Signal Processing and in 2008-2009 I completed the “Medical Image Computing” postgraduate program in the Dept. of Medical Physics and Bio-engineering at University College London. I wrote two theses related to segmentation problems from CT images. One was about the segmentation of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and the other one about the segmentation of Thoracic Organs.
My personal connection with Prof. Maria Petrou inspired me to further continue my studies. My personal difficulties and her unexpected lost trigger dramatic changes in my life in 2012. This was the first real turning point in my life where I decided to leave my old life and move with Ville to Auckland, NZ. After hard work and support from Mike Brookes, Jari Kaipio and my partner in everything, Ville Rimpiläinen, I completed my PhD at Imperial College London in 2015 under the supervision of Mike Brookes.
Missing Europe was one of the main things I learnt during my stay in NZ.
Coming back from NZ in 2014, we lived in Muenster (DE) for two years (2014-2016) working at the local Maths department on topics related to Raman spectroscopy and signal de-convolution in the group of Prof. M. Burger.
Greece always was in our plans and in 2016 we packed our stuff and moved to Corfu. We spent a semester (2017) in Ionian University teaching basic techniques about imaging the brain activity (In effect, I gave some lectures in the course "Recording and Processing of Brain Signals" which I could briefly describe as a peculiar experience...).
During our time in Greece, I was lucky enough to participate in a call from the IKY-Siemens program, and to obtain a scholarship which allowed me to work briefly in the group of Bioelectromagentism in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece with Prof. Th. Samaras.
Due to the difficult times in Greece, we decided (with Ville) to leave once again. I was lucky enough to work in a very interesting project at the University of Bath on imaging ionospheric scintillation (until Oct 2018) and I had the chance to meet and collaborate with a very kind, true researcher, Dr. Nathan Smith who offered me his insight on many machine learning techniques.
Until Sept. 2021 I run a project in Tampere University, funded by Academy of Finland, which allows me to investigate possible strategies to perform superresolution in different tomography applications and inverse problems.
I share my time between the UK, Finland and Greece.
I hope to be lucky in the future to continue working in interesting projects and sharing moments with creative people!
