Attention Coaches, Parents and Wrestlers …..

Alberni Wrestling is proud to announce some very important news for our 2017 Alberni Summer Wrestling Camp July 13-16.

Canada’s 2008 Olympic gold medalist Carol Huynh has been confirmed as one of our headline clinicians for the 20017 Alberni Summer Wrestling Camp. Carol grew up in Hazelton BC and was a pioneer in women’s wrestling in our province. She attended our camp as a high school participant and was eventually part of the growth of women’s wrestling at Simon Fraser University. During these years Carol was often a clinician at our Alberni Camp. In 2008 our large contingent from Port Alberni was in Beijing to support our own Travis Cross and we had the honour and thrill to be there to witness and cheer for Carol as she won her historic gold for Canada. Many of us from Alberni Wrestling were also in London for the 2012 Olympics when Carol won a bronze for her second Olympic medal.

Carol is currently a coach in Calgary and one of the leading figures within the new United World Wrestling. All of Canada were proud when Carol was a critical activist and spokesperson for UWW during the quest to have wrestling re-instated as an Olympic sport. It is a unique opportunity for our athletes and anyone attending the 2017 Alberni Summer Wrestling Camp to have several days with one of Canada’s best and a world leader in our sport. .

A quality camp needs outstanding clinicians like Carol and the other coaches we expect to announce soon but you also need strong training partners. Typically the Alberni Camp features close to 100 athletes and a tremendous learning and training environment. We are pleased to now announce that BC Wrestling has committed to having all of their Canada Games bound Team BC in attendance for the entire camp. These athletes and the Canada Games coaches will add so much to the camp dynamic as they prepare for the Canada Games in Winnipeg in August. In addition BCWA expect many if not all of the alternates selected for the team will also be in attendance in Alberni. This one decision now adds 30-50 of the top male and female high school wrestlers in BC to the Alberni camp. We also hope to have the Team BC athletes heading to the North American Indigenous Games in Toronto at this camp as well.

While it is only April, the Alberni Summer Wrestling Camp is shaping up to be the place to be for up and coming wrestlers July 13-16. Registrations are now open online or via mail. The Alberni camp features a full dormitory and meals package for out of town participants as well as bus pick up at the Nanaimo ferry terminal for mainlanders. The normal features of this popular camp are back including two full gyms of mat space at the state of the art Alberni District Secondary School, the famous lake day, unique and fun activities and games, camp shirts, competition matches, movie nights and so much more. An early bird discounted fee for the camp is available prior to June 1st . This fee saves you $50 off of the regular camp fees that kicks in on June 1st. Payment can be made via bank transfer or Pay Pal. Check out our website at www.alberniwrestling.ca or contact Camp Director James Messenger at jmessenger@sd70.bc.ca for more information.

Coaches please circulate this info to your wrestlers and their parents now and have them register now for the 2017 Alberni Summer Wrestling Camp so they are not disappointed they missed it.
