"The Hockey Canada Skills Academy offered at Alberni District Secondary helped me get to the Junior A level of hockey playing. I am playing in my second full year with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs in the BCHL. I also played a number of games three seasons ago as an AP player. In Fact the Academy helped me first play Major Midget Hockey for the North Island Silvertips. I am a 1991 born player and graduated from high school last June. In my first year of Midget hockey I made the regional Major Midget team. Coming from a Double A association in Alberni I spent time in the academy working on my passing, shooting, and most important skating skills. At various major midget practices we worked on team tactics. The Academy helped me with my hockey skills so that they became equal with many of my team mates. Being on the ice an extra 3 or 4 times a week was very helpful.

If the academy and hockey classes had not been offered at my high school in Port Alberni I don’t feel that I would have had the opportunities that I have had in hockey. The academy helped all of my individual hockey skills, helped me understand that mental preparation before practice and a game was important, and that dry land training and nutrition are as important as on ice training.

I would like to thank the ADSS coaching staff and head coach Rick Schievink who has been a great mentor. Also academy assistant coaches Jim Hiller and Bryant Perrier who were both Alberni Valley Bulldog Head coaches."
