New generic formulations are being dispensed as substitutes for generic Concerta since October 2013. These "generics" contain the same active ingredient and use the same dosage, but do not have the unique OROS extended release delivery system that Concerta has. As a result they may have very different pharmacodynamics, affecting the way the medication acts. For this reason, we are now specifying the OROS generic only ( barrel shaped tablets are inscribed "alza") on all prescriptions for generic Concerta. CVS generally dispenses an OROS generic round shaped tablet made by TriGen, which is acceptable as well.
