In the book RANGE, David Epstein, 2019, the author offers compelling evidence for generalism complementing and being a greater source of creativity, innovation, and breakthroughs than specialism, in a broad range of fields from sports and entertainment, business and academics, government programs and regulation. The efficiency of specialization works well for 'kind' problems, but for 'wicked' problems a much broader source of ideas, methods, analogies and experiences from various disciplines shows in study after study to be a much better path to breakthrough than deep specialization.
