I practise as a generalist providing treatment for any of the conditions listed within the 'What Acupuncture Can help" page, however my particular interests include treating pain, anxiety, stress, providing IVF support and Derma Roller: Where East Meets West
My Background In Health
I worked as a registered nurse for most of my career with the National Health Service in Scotland and later in my career started my practice in Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture and continue to do so. I have availed of opportunities to visit China for further education.
I have also taken the opportunity to write some books. My first book published in Amazon Kindle was an adventure, thriller cum romantic fiction, whereas my second book is a Self Help book with suggestions for helping muscular-skeletal pain. My third book is a children's book called The Power of Childhood Dreams.
East and West Can Co-exist
During this period and whilst still in China with my husband, I began to feel that I needed to find something more where I could continue to use my skills as a qualified nurse and acupuncturist to help people. I had an idea of wanting to bring together my Western Medical and Traditional Chinese Medical knowledge.
Understanding that Western Medicine is a solution based philosophy, whilst Chinese Medicine takes a more holistic approach and is about promoting the patient’s own body’s healing abilities, I looked around to find something that would complement both approaches.
Not long after this I came across an exciting opportunity that led to my discovery of the Micro-Needling Derma Roller, which I believe complements both western and chinese philosophies. The micro-needling derma roller taps into one of the eastern acupuncture principles of moving blood for healing and the western medicine skin healing knowledge of fibroblasts, cell networking and the production of collagen.
In one study, twenty blinded biopsies taken from 10 different patients from various parts of their body demonstrated an average increase in new fibres of 206%, in one biopsy a 1000% increase was recorded. A second study by Korean Dermatologists (Kim, et al, 2006) (5) compared IPL (Elippse, DDDD, Denmark) to micro needling while evaluating collagen synthesis. Patients received three treatments at two week intervals (18 Control, 18 IPL, 18 MN). Micro needling MN demonstrated: 1) more skin thickness than IPL or control, 2) histology (Micro needling showed more collagen fibre than IPL or control 3) and a higher collagen qualitative analysis than IPL or control. Armed with this information I investigated further to find out more about the popularity of the roller. One investigation investigation was on google where I found out that on average over the last 6 months there have been over 2 million google searches a month for Derma Rollers. In addition, there have been over 500,000 searches a month on google for micro-needling. Isn’t the internet awesome!!
Learning of the high universal interest about a product I had not heard of before stimulated me to increase my knowledge even further. I needed greater understanding of the efficacy, benefits and use and safety of the derma roller before testing it on myself. I am sure you will all understand this.
