Loss of global biodiversity continues at an alarming rate, driven largely by habitat loss due to multiple development pressures. Over the past 25 years, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) has been the major source of financial and technical support for developing countries seeking to conserve their biodiversity. The Independent Evaluation Offices of the GEF and UNDP recently completed an impact evaluation of GEF Support to Protected Areas and Protected Area Systems that found evidence of contributions to lower habitat loss. GEF support has also assisted countries in addressing factors affecting biodiversity conservation through capacity building and strengthened governance. The evaluation can be accessed here on the GEF IEO website (www.gefieo.org).
