The NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) operated by CIESIN at Columbia University is pleased to announce the availability of several new data sets for testing and use:
Global Annual Average PM2.5 Grids from MODIS and MISR Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), v1. This data set features annual grids of particulate matter concentrations at ground level from 2001 – 2010 estimated from satellite instruments, based on a NASA-funded project led by Battelle Memorial Institute and CIESIN. See: http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/data/collection/sdei.
Global Roads Open Access Data Set, version 1 (gROADSv1). Developed under the auspices of the Global Roads Data Development Task Group of the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) of the International Council for Science, gROADSv1 combines the best available open access data on roads between human settlements into a global roads coverage consistent with the United Nations Spatial Data Infrastructure Transport (UNSDI-T) version 2 data model. See: http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/data/set/groads-global-roads-open-access-v1.
Historic Anthropogenic Biomes of the World, v1 (beta). This collection of four data sets developed by Erle Ellis and colleagues describes anthropogenic transformations within the terrestrial biosphere caused by sustained direct human interaction with ecosystems, including agriculture and urbanization, across three centuries (1700-2000). See:http://beta.sedac.ciesin.org/data/collection/anthromes.
Mangrove Forests Distribution (beta). This data set maps the extent of mangroves forests of the world circa 2000. It was compiled using data at 30-meter spatial resolution from the Global Land Survey and the Landsat archive, applying hybrid supervised and unsupervised digital image classification techniques. See: http://beta.sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/data/set/mangroves-mangrove-forests-distribution-2000.
Natural Resource Protection and Child Health Indicators, 2012 Release (2006 – 2012) (beta). The 2012 release of the Natural Resource Protection and Child Health Indicators was produced in support of U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation decisions regarding funding eligibility. The indicators are successors to the Natural Resource Management Index (NRMI), which was produced from 2006 to 2011 based on the same underlying data. The NRPI covers 235 countries and is calculated based on the weighted average percentage of biomes under protected status. The CHI is a composite index for 175 countries derived from the average of three proximity-to-target scores for access to improved sanitation, access to improved water, and child mortality. This release includes a consistent time series of NRPIs and CHIs for 2006 to 2012. See: http://beta.sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/data/set/nrmi-natural-resource-protection-child-health-indicators-2012.
Ramsar Sea level Impacts (beta). This data set delineates the potential areas of inundation around wetlands of international importance under 1- and 2-meter sea level rise scenarios, based on the boundaries for wetland sites designated under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands intersected with different coastal elevation zones. SEDAC’s Population Estimation Service has been updated to support tablets and smart phones. The Population Estimation Service enables users to quickly obtain estimates of the number of people residing in specific areas without having to download and analyze large amounts of spatial data. The service accepts polygons that define areas of interest, then returns population totals, land area, quality measures, and basic parametric statistics for the requested polygons based on SEDAC’s Gridded Population of the World data set. See: http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/data/collection/gpw-v3/population-estimation-service.
