Colonel Joseph Snider

Joseph Snider (photograph) was also a Morgantown politician. A proponent of West Virginia statehood and an opponent of slavery, he took over command of the 7th West Virginia from the ill Colonel Evans in August, 1862. Snider had his horse shot from under him at Antietam and was wounded in the head at Fredericksburg. A delegation from West Virginia lobbied President Lincoln to make Snider a general, but to no avail. He was mustered out of service when the regiment was consolidated into a battalion in September, 1863. After Snider, Lt. Col. Jonathan Lockwood led the battalion.
