To be successful in 313, it is essential to read all of the chapters in the textbook. In addition to the chapters you have a course website that contains summaries of the chapters, PowerPoint presentations, content videos, and chapter activities. All of the activities in the course website are designed to help you learn, retain, and apply the content in the book. Remember, your goal is to pass the 315 examination, but also to truly learn the material in preparation for future courses as well as a career in education.
Understanding the Exam
There will be a required proctored examination to pass this course. Examinations are administrated at approved test centers. Your advisor or mentors will help locate a suitable center. If you have studied the course material as instructed, and have taken the time to review, then you should be well prepared to sit for the exam.
The exam will generally consist of two sections:
· Section I generally consists of 40-60 short answer questions. Questions will primarily be multiple choice. However, other short answer type questions may be included (matching, true or false and short answer).
· Section II will present you with a series of short essay or scenario questions, of which you will be required to respond to 1- 3 questions. You will be required to address the issues as outlined in the instructions.
Essay Writing Tips
Part of your examination requires answering an essay question. Usually you will be given two or three options to choose from, allowing you to write on the topic that you know the most about. Generally, each essay question will have multiple parts, requiring you to overview your knowledge of the topic while also specifying certain aspects of the topic that you should be sure to include. It is imperative that your essay response hit upon every aspect of the question, expressing a thorough understanding of the topic and responding to all areas. While there is no set required length, an essay response should include 3-5 paragraphs.
Essay exam responses require proper writing format, including good organization and flow. You should begin with an introduction that illustrates overall understanding of the topic and question. Then, continue with body paragraphs that respond to the details of the question. Finally, end with a brief conclusion that summarizes the main points or provides further details. Remember, the idea is to show that you understand the topic of the exam question and the subject matter, overall. See the Writing Guide for more information about writing essays.
