Attitudes and Manners

Attitudes in life are very important. The way people treat you is probably a reflection of the way you act towards others. Respect to be respected is probably one of the keys to happiness.

This term we are going to read, and then watch, "About a Boy". At first sight, this film and book adaptation is a very funny story. However, it is a funny story with several serious topics such as mother-son relationships, taking responsibilities in your life and, probably the most important of all, BULLYING.

Bullying is a social scourge which affects more people than we could ever imagine. Victims of bullying are very often too terrified to admit what is happening to them to the point that sometimes they even prefer to commit suicide, especially in the case of teenagers, rather than talk to adults.

Let's, therefore, reflect on bullying. We are going to put ourselves in the shoes of the victims to understand how they might feel. Besides, we are going to try and find solutions to the problem. Let's watch this:

INDIVIDUAL TASK. Leave your comment on this wall with a possible solution to fight against bullying at school. Click here and ask your teacher for the password.

GROUP WORK. In groups of 4/5 people, you need to prepare a leaflet to start a campaign to stop bullying at schools and to help the victims. Use smore to do so. Your leaflet should include a video in which you have to record one of the following options:

  • OPTION 1. Perform a scene in which some students are the bullies and others the victims. Record the scene, upload it to YouTube and include it in your leaflet.

  • OPTION 2. Shoot a TV programme in which you interview victims of bullying. One of you will have to be the interviewer, others the victims and you could also include some of the victims' family members. Upload your programme to YouTube and include it in your leaflet.

  • You need to write the script of your video on a Google document and share it with the teacher.

  • Please bear in mind that cyberbullying is also a type of bullying, so you could also work on it if you wish.

  • The deadline to share your work with the teacher is Monday 18th April. The leaflets will be shown in class and shared on the blog and school website.

CULTURAL WEEK (Optional). The III Cultural Week will be celebrated from 2-6 May and this year it centres around "Magic, Fear and Mystery". If you fancy collaborating, some of you could perform the scene you are going to record. Also, we could print out the leaflets and give them out at school. Remember to focus on how the victims might feel and be respectful at all times.
