The Journey
We’re set upon this universal way
Without a yea or nay or just consent.
Some ask a deity by what intent
They’re here at all. Is there some due to pay,
For consciousness of struggle and delight
In this world’s mix of joys and discontent?
Is there a reason why the day is lent,
Before the looming dark of lasting night?
A sparrow, it is told by holy Bede,
Flew through an ancient hall of worldly feast
From outer dark to outer dark again.
Is this the human span of joy and pain?
Asked Edwin, King from pagan faith released,
And sought for meaning, this life’s warranty.
