Saxion is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands, with more than 28,000 students, including a strong international community. We offer a wide range of English-taught Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes, focusing on applied learning, innovation, and strong links with industry. Our unique strengths lie in:
A practical, career-oriented approach to education
Cutting-edge programmes in technology, business, arts, and social sciences
A welcoming and international environment for students from over 100 nationalities
Location
Saxion University of Applied Sciences has campuses in Enschede, Deventer, and Apeldoorn, three welcoming student cities in the eastern Netherlands. These cities combine a safe, affordable environment with good transport links to larger hubs like Amsterdam and Germany. The campuses are integrated into city life rather than isolated, giving students daily access to Dutch culture and community.
Areas of Strength
Saxion is especially recognised for its applied programmes in engineering, information technology, creative media and game technologies, business, hospitality and tourism, and health sciences. Degrees are designed with strong industry input and place emphasis on hands-on projects, labs, and internships.
Cost
For non-EU students, tuition fees are typically around €9,000 per year. Living costs in Enschede and Deventer are generally lower than in larger Dutch cities, making Saxion a comparatively affordable choice within the Netherlands. Students should also budget for housing, insurance, residence permit fees, and study materials.
Ranking
As a University of Applied Sciences, Saxion is not ranked highly in global research-oriented tables such as QS or Times Higher Education, which favour research universities. Within the Dutch system of applied universities, however, Saxion is considered a strong institution, particularly valued for teaching quality, employability, and its close ties with industry.
International Focus
Many bachelor and master programmes are taught in English, and Saxion attracts students from more than 80 nationalities. The university supports international students through dedicated services, housing guidance, language support, and orientation activities. Partnerships with employers and institutions across Europe strengthen opportunities for exchange, applied research, and graduate employment.
Why It May Suit SISQ Students
Students who prefer practical learning and clear career pathways may find Saxion an excellent fit. The strong focus on employability and industry placements aligns well with the IB’s emphasis on inquiry, collaboration, and real-world application. Those interested in technology, engineering, or creative industries will find programmes with strong professional outcomes.
Admissions
Applicants should hold a secondary qualification equivalent to the Dutch requirement, such as the full IB Diploma. Programmes typically expect a minimum of 24–26 points depending on the subject area. English proficiency (IELTS or equivalent) is required for English-taught courses, and some programmes may include additional requirements such as a portfolio, interview, or subject prerequisites.
Notable Feature
Saxion integrates internships and real-world projects into almost every degree. Graduate employment rates are high in areas like ICT, engineering, and business, reflecting the applied approach. The combination of smaller class sizes, practical teaching, and strong local industry connections makes Saxion a compelling choice for students seeking a career-ready education in the Netherlands.
