Course Description
In Grade Ten English I, students work to master their oral and written communication skills and to become more independent critical thinkers. They will accomplish these goals by focusing their reading on archetypal elements and story patterns found in a variety of literary genres. Students will engage in learning activities to develop strong reading comprehension strategies, which will prepare them for skills on the PSAT. Instruction integrates grammar, writing mechanics, vocabulary development, and development of sophisticated literary analysis in discussion and in composition. During this course, we will also examine various periods and genres of literature as an expression of thought. Readings will include fiction, nonfiction, novels, short stories, poetry, essays, and a variety of excerpts.
