Math at Royal
The Mathematics Department at Royal High School emphasizes the essential core skills for Mathematical Modeling with functional and statistical analysis as well as with geometrical spatial representations and measures. All courses are supported by algebraic tools and technology. Students must have a minimum of three high school mathematics courses, though most universities and colleges encourage four. Core Instruction includes Essential Content Standards and Mathematical Practices incorporated throughout the courses of Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II.
Upon completion of the core instruction, whenever your student finishes Algebra II, more modern analytical functional, statistical, and spatial skills are developed through a wide variety of courses beyond the core. These include Statistics, Precalculus or Advanced Placement courses: AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB and BC as well as International Baccalaureate courses: IB Mathematics SL (Standard Level) and IB Mathematics HL (Higher Level - Two Year Course). The IB courses are only available starting at junior year, as mandated by the program.
Additional beyond-the-core classes are computer science courses. These courses introduce students to key computing concepts, from how the internet works to computer programming. Programming languages include Scratch, Javascript and Java. AP computer science classes prepare students for the AP exams allowing them to earn credit towards their college requirements.
Department Chairpersons: Mrs. Susan Sciarillo and Mr. Robert Willging
