Preliminary Research

The academic preparation of the linguist is essential to the success of an RGC workshop. The facilitator should research the following topics before the first workshop:

• The alphabets of all related languages

The facilitator may want to suggest the symbols of similar sounds in related languages.

• All linguistic publications and write-ups on the language (or related languages)

Use the grammar proposed in write-ups as a starting point for research, confirming or rejecting hypotheses during the workshop. If no write-ups on the language are available, research the phonology, morphology and syntax of related languages to get an idea of what to expect. 

• All literacy materials already in the language (if any)

Make use of, as much as possible, all literacy and translation materials in the language as starting points for data research. 

Supplies Needed

The following supplies are needed for the first RGC workshop:

For each participant and staff member, buy...

• Notebook (at least 100 pages)

• Pencil

• Sets of colored pencils

• Eraser

• Sharpener

• Bag to hold these supplies

 Also make sure the following supplies are available at the workshop location:

• White boards (or chalk boards), at least 1 meter by 1½ meters

• Markers/chalk (in several colors)

The facilitator will need his/her own notebook, pencil, eraser and set of colored pencils at least 2 weeks before the workshop in order to prepare the langauge data. S/he will aslo need...

• At least 188 pieces of A4 size paper

• Scissors

• Computer with FLEx + word processing software (e.g. Microsoft Word)

• Printer w/ black ink
