OCTOBER 2023

News From Siena

Dear families and friends of Siena,

Perhaps the most important note that I can share this month comes from Pope Francis. In this time of uncertainty and conflict, let us read Pope Francis' prayer for peace.

Lord God of peace, hear our prayer!

We have tried so many times and over so many years to resolve our conflicts by our own powers and by the force of our arms. How many moments of hostility and darkness have we experienced; how much blood has been shed; how many lives have been shattered; how many hopes have been buried… But our efforts have been in vain.

Now, Lord, come to our aid! Grant us peace, teach us peace; guide our steps in the way of peace. Open our eyes and our hearts, and give us the courage to say: "Never again war!"; "With war everything is lost". Instill in our hearts the courage to take concrete steps to achieve peace.

Lord, God of Abraham, God of the Prophets, God of Love, you created us and you call us to live as brothers and sisters. Give us the strength daily to be instruments of peace; enable us to see everyone who crosses our path as our brother or sister. Make us sensitive to the plea of our citizens who entreat us to turn our weapons of war into implements of peace, our trepidation into confident trust, and our quarreling into forgiveness.

Keep alive within us the flame of hope, so that with patience and perseverance we may opt for dialogue and reconciliation. In this way may peace triumph at last, and may the words "division", "hatred" and "war" be banished from the heart of every man and woman. Lord, defuse the violence of our tongues and our hands. Renew our hearts and minds, so that the word which always brings us together will be "brother", and our way of life will always be that of: Shalom, Peace, Salaam!

Amen.

God bless,

Dr. Sue Savaglio-Jarvis

President, Siena Catholic Schools

P.S. As always, follow Siena on Facebook and get an inside view of our schools through "Dr. Sue's View." Videos are frequently uploaded that illustrate the best our schools have to offer.

Mission: Possible!

This month I ask you to ponder this as a parent/guardian, and/or educator:

In solidarity with the people of the Middle East, in particular, our Jewish sisters and brothers and all those of good will suffering in the Holy Land, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) will join with the Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land and Catholic dioceses around the world in a day of prayer, fasting, and abstinence on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.

St. Rita: SC Johnson Kaleidoscope Education Series, Building Thinking Classrooms

On Monday, October 9, SCJ invited Middle Schools to attend the Kaleidoscope Education Series Program at the Golden Rondelle.

This particular day focused on the exciting world of physics. St. Rita's 8th grader, Arlette B-F., was one of the students chosen to demonstrate how electrons flow through objects....in this case...causing her hair to rise!

Thank you to Michelle Sweetman and SCJ for continued funding and making these experiences accessible to our students.

"Building Thinking Classrooms... exudes enthusiasm for students, how they think, and how those thoughts coalesce into powerful thinking classrooms."

From Cheryl Maraccini: That's what we are trying to build in our classrooms, POWERFUL THINKERS!  In 8th grade science, we use these concepts to construct the details of a conclusion in an experiment. In math, we use these concepts to help students think "outside the box" and find answers in various ways. Siena has brought in CESA 6 to help us foster this concept and build a POWERFUL THINKING CLASSROOM within our middle school math programs.

Meme Monday Fun at Our Lady of Grace Academy

Middle school teacher Theresa Erickson decided to have a bit of fun with her students, implementing Meme Mondays. For “Meme Monday” each grade has to come up with a clever meme or two for a picture shown in class. The winners will have their meme displayed in the classroom all year and receive a special prize. Each class has a winner and this has been a real hit with all of middle school and really got them talking and thinking!

Sixth Grade Retreats

Sixth graders across all Siena Catholic Schools recently had their retreats with the theme of "F.R.O.G.: Fully Rely On God." Students focused on building characteristics in themselves that make them better people, the people that God made us to be, centered around scripture readings.

Angels Youth Softball

Angels Youth Softball Association's annual 'Wig Game' on Oct. 5 featured softball stars from St. Lucy, St. Rita, St. Joseph, and various religious education programs within Siena. A great time was had by all!
