Key Details
Event: ASCL Conference for Strategic Leadership of Languages
Date: 16 June, 08:45 - 15:15
Where: The Studio, Birmingham
Conference Focus:
Developed by ASCL and the National Consortium for Languages Education (NCLE), this timely and thought-provoking conference invites school and system leaders to explore how to lead languages strategically, ensuring they thrive within inclusive, sustainable, and globally-minded curricula.
Through expert keynotes, policy insight and real-world leadership discussions, you’ll gain the knowledge and confidence to embed languages at the heart of your school or trust strategy - driving equity, oracy and global citizenship for every learner.
Join us to discover how language learning can be a powerful driver of equity, diversity, and student belonging.
During the conference, you'll have the chance to explore these crucial questions:
How should school leaders respond to the end of the Ebacc and changes to Progress 8?
How does this interact with the new Ofsted framework and the new GCSE in French, Spanish and German?
And what does the Schools White Paper tell us about the role of languages in an ambitious curriculum that supports progress and closes the ‘disadvantage gap’, including SEND?
Why attend:
Enhance the profile of MFL within ASCL and more widely at this crucial time
Join with ASCL to make the case with Ofqual, DfE and other government agencies
Strengthen SLNs' role as key 'nexus' between national strategy/policy and our networks of schools on the ground

TeachMeet: Spotlight on Speaking
3rd December 2025
We welcomed teachers from schools across the region, from Redditch to Sutton Coldfield for an afternoon of discussion and moderation around the new speaking exams, with a focus on spontaneous speech.
You can find the slides here, to refer back to, or share with your departments.
Key Take Aways
To build a culture of spontaneous speech, activities need to be low-stakes.
We need to train our students, so speaking becomes part of the normal routine.
Adding in gamification or competitive elements can be motivational.
Many chatbots are appearing, which can be useful for independent practice, but need to consider the logistics of using these in class vs at home. (See below for more information).
Training students using PALMS, read aloud annotations etc. gets them into good habits early. Esmeralda talks about her rule of 3 to ensure developed answers here.
These slides may be useful to complete moderation and standardisation in your departments.
