Overview
This lesson set will help introduce students to an important text structure, cause and effect. This structure is often used to understand natural phenomena and human behavior. Authors rely on the structure of cause and effect to explain, show order, change character behavior and create plot. In this lesson set, students will read closely to recognize cause and effect relationships between events in history. They will recognize and use words and phrases that signal cause and effect relationships, and summarize cause and effect relationships through speaking and writing. Students will examine multiple accounts of the same event, take notes, and use their findings to create fact-based historical fiction diary entries that contain cause and effect relationships from a specific time period. This lesson set is an opportunity to teach students an important text structure that will help them navigate nonfiction and narrative nonfiction with greater success.
