Overview
The lesson set emphasizes the close reading of poetry to consider and debate the meaning of poems. Students compose original poems incorporating techniques to strengthen meaning. The lesson set culminates with a poetry debate in which students will craft arguments to persuade an audience that their interpretation is accurate.

Poetry Interpretation
Directions:
- Today you will state your opinion about the meaning of a piece of poetry.
- First you will reread "The Red Wheelbarrow" by William Carlos Williams and you will read an example of a poetry interpretation.
- Then you will read "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes and you will use the opinion phrases and the guide to help you write your own poetry interpretation.
- Login to Google Classroom and you will find the poetry interpretation assignment. Please submit it when finished. You can also find the assignment here.
