A Masterpiece from the late Heian Period (approx. 1,000 years ago)
Designated as a Nationally Important Cultural Property, this statue of Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha) is carved from a single block of Japanese cypress (Ichimoku-zukuri). Its serene expression and elegant posture are characteristic of the late Heian period’s refined artistry.
A Sacred Legacy from a "Lost Temple"
While the exact origins of this statue at Shinko-ji remain a mystery, local tradition suggests a fascinating connection to the past. It is believed to have been brought from a nearby ancient temple that no longer exists.
This "lost temple" was once home to Ryosen Sanzo, the only Japanese monk in history to achieve the prestigious title of "Sanzo" (Tripitaka Master) in China. The legends passed down at our Yakushi-do hall support the theory that this Buddha was once protected by his lineage.
