Spirit Week Champs
How spirit week has affected students and how it can help bring more people together.
Spirit week was an eventful week filled with activities, such as homecoming, and competition within the homecoming football game, but nobody showed more competitive spirit than Mrs. Lehl’s second period class.
“It was very competitive and tense, but that’s what made spirit week fun. Competing against other classes, seeing who could show the most school spirit,” senior Luke Romano said.
However it’s never always easy to get kids to compete, but for Mrs. Lehl, it was all about continuing the legacy.
“To get kids to participate and compete in spirit week, I first have to ask if they want to win, because if you aren’t trying to win, then there’s no point to try," Mrs. Lehl said. "I also always try to encourage the kids to continue the legacy of winning spirit week, so I try different ways to build “hype” around the competition. I’ve also found just sending out reminders is important,” Mrs. Lehl said.
Competitiveness isn’t the only thing spirit week brings out of people, it also serves as a founding purpose of bringing the students and community together.
“Spirit week is a really fun opportunity for all students in the school. From settling in to school from the summer, and the football games, to the dress up competitions," Mrs. Lehl said. "I think it serves as a reminder to all students that we can still have fun, and it’s not all about work,” Lehl said.
To balance the work and fun, sometimes you have to come together to work in groups or in this case, in classes.
“Sprit week brings us together especially as individual classes, because it’s something fun to be involved with and gives people a sense of unity,” sophomore Hudson O’Connell said.
Spirit week also doesn’t only help bring the students together, but helps the staff bring more of a connection to the students.
“I feel like the staff participating in spirit week helps students relax, but also create more of a connection with the students, because the students get to find out more about the teacher based on the day/participation,” Romano said.
While one participated to pair with friends, another felt the need to participate simply from Mrs. Lehl’s encouragement.
“I participated in spirit week because it’s good to show school support, and also primarily because Mrs. Lehl wanted to win the competition between all the second period classes,” O’Connell said.
While winning wasn’t the most exciting part of the week, one of these themes was seen as the most unique, but also provided variety in the week.
“My favorite day of spirit week was jungle because it provided a diversity and variety between all the outfits. I also think it was the most unique day out of all the days as well,” sophomore CJ Holt said.
