Emotion Regulation is the ability to control one's emotional state. This is an advanced skill that can be challenging for a child's developing brain!
Throughout SSD, the Zones of Regulation, or an emotion regulation curriculum, is implemented in Community Circle lessons. Each classroom has a Calm Corner for students to access when needed to self regulate. We are also continuing a newer program, the Mustang Zone, that teaches coping skills and Zones of Regulation techniques.
This year, we are piloting our Green Room for students, run by our Wellness Room IA. If a student is a part of the Green Room, they will visit it a determined amount of times each week for ten minutes. The goal is to teach skills and eventually have students implement these learned emotion regulation skills on their own.
What is the Mustang Zone? Zones of Regulation is the foundational curriculum for the Green Room. Activities and lessons will be individualized and may focus on self-regulation, coping skills, anxiety and stress, managing emotions, and significant life circumstances. There will be a daily Zone check in followed by a short lesson, activity, or discussion to correspond with the identified topic.
How can I get my child into the Mustang Zone? Please contact Alyssa or your student's teacher to fill out a referral form if you feel this intervention would be helpful for your child! Our Mustang Zone team discusses each referral and adds students into this support as deemed necessary.
