Apps & Extensions

Instead of installing software like you do with a typical computer, a Chromebook relies on resources online. Applications usually do not install anything on the Chromebook, but will typically be placing a shortcut onto your applications menu.

Most applications are free to use, some you will have to pay for after the trial, or to unlock more features you may have to pay the company a fee but the basic application is still usable.

Extensions on the other hand will often install a small "plugin" to the browser to enable some feature that can be used on almost any webpage. Sometimes there may be an application and an extension from the same company that can be used. The application may be a shortcut to the company's website and the extension may add a feature that can be used at almost any time.

An example of this might be EasyBib. The application, when added, will take you directly to the EasyBib webpage. But, the extension, when clicked, will help you create a citation for a bibliography from whatever webpage you are viewing.

Students may not be able to access all of the applications and extensions from the Chrome Web Store. There is a formal approval process needed in order to have an application and/or extension added to the Student Chrome Web Store.
