IS THERE A BOOK THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE IN THE HMS LIBRARY?
Parents have concerns because some YA books discuss mature topics, explore mature themes, and may contain strong language. HMS teachers and librarians teach students how to self censor their reading choices. We also encourage students to discuss what is considered acceptable for their family with their parents/guardians.
At Helena Middle School, we label YA books with a blue and white sticker on the upper spine of the book. Most YA books also have the Interest Level identified as "Young Adult" in Destiny Discover (our online catalog). Students may also check suggested sites (located at the bottom of the page) to determine if the book is suited for them.
If a student checks out ANY book and decides it's not for them, the student can simply return the book, no questions asked.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer
Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds
Editorial reviews are used to determine if a book is considered YA. Reviews sometimes differ based on the opinion of the reviewing organization. Common book review sources that we use are School Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, Booklist, and more. To find these reviews, parents can use common book retailer sites (not every book will have reviews listed).
Click on View All Resources and select EBSCOhost Search. Click Limit Your Results: Publication: School Library Journal (or Kirkus, etc.). Search for the title of the book for which you are seeking a review.
Search for the book title and click on Editorial Reviews.
Search for the book title and click on Editorial Reviews.
Search for the book title or look under the "Book Reviews" tab.
Common Sense Media does not provide Editorial Reviews. However, this site does provide parent and student reviews of the titles.
