Nearly half of all pregnancies in the UK are unplanned. In Yorkshire, the impact falls hardest on our most deprived communities.
When a pregnancy is planned, the "head start" is significant: folic acid, early prenatal care, and better long-term health for both mother and baby. But 15 years of public health cuts have left our contraception services struggling to keep pace with modern needs.
MAPP-SY is a new research project dedicated to proving why this must change.
We are bringing together women’s voices, primary care doctors, health economists, and abortion providers to answer one question: What is the true benefit—for health and for the economy—of reducing unplanned pregnancies in South Yorkshire?
By demonstrating clear cost savings and health improvements, we aim to unlock the funding and capacity our region’s healthcare system desperately needs.
Over the past fortnight we have hosted three amazing stakeholder workshops, hearing ideas and insights from truly inspirational people involved in primary care, sexual health, abortion care, local governance, service commissioning, health visiting, obstetrics and midwifery services, drugs and alcohol support, and community and charity organisations. Thank you to everyone who gave their valuable time to talk to us! Your input is crucial to making sure our research is asking and answering the right questions.
Our next step is model design and data hunting; watch this space as we share updates along the way!
