As a GP who specialises in sexual and reproductive health, contraception forms a large amount of my workload. I continually saw women having negative effects of contraception. I became frustrated at the lack of information when it comes to understanding who is more likely to have negative effects from certain type.
My dream is to develop a way of capturing that data via an easy-to-use method and develop the world's first database on hormonal effects. That data would then be freely available to academics to make discoveries about hormonal health like we have never done before.
I seem so many tech companies, especially those led by male founders, who are farming women's health data for commercial benefit. It is time that the academic world stepped up into this space.
I am not anti-hormone, in fact, I see hormonal contraception as being one of the most important factors in the liberation of women who became in charge of their reproduction ability. I have used the Mirena coil for many years and love it. I see the impact that can happen for women with horrible periods, PCOS, endometriosis and many more gynaecological conditions. One I am worried about is how we expect individuals to take hormonal contraception, which gives them dramatic adverse effects, and put up with it because at least you won't get pregnant.
