"Tasty" Style videos are inspired by the distinctive style of recipe video seen on the "Tasty" YouTube channel.
The distinctive features of this style have been described elsewhere as:
first-person perspective
fast-paced videos
text-only instructions (no narration)
Here is an example of a "Tasty" style recipe video:
Why might this style be beneficial for students?
There is plenty of research on the pros and cons of shorter videos, and the benefits of first-person perspective videos (“point-of-view”). In terms of narration, from Mayers’ multimedia learning theory, we might expect narration to be beneficial, as the brain can process both visual and auditory stimuli in parallel. However, a meta-analysis by Adesope and Nesbit found that there was little benefit to spoken-written presentations compared to written-only presentations - a concept they termed “verbal redundancy”.
So far we haven’t seen any other research on the use of this video style to support laboratory teaching in Higher Education. Therefore we decided to trial it at the University of Sheffield and assess the impact on levels of student engagement.
