In this research project, we trialled the use of the "Tasty"-style of lab video for the intro week activity Danger Lab. This lab is taken by all first year Engineering students at the University of Sheffield. Students compare the energy needed to break a piece of chocolate at room temperature, compared to liquid nitrogen temperature (-196 °C).
Students were given access to two videos:
a 5-minute video in a traditional PowerPoint style, shot from a third-person perspective
a 1-minute "Tasty"-style video (shown below)
Students were then invited to complete an anonymous survey with their thoughts on the videos. The survey received Ethical Approval from the University of Sheffield.
We found that the 1-minute video had a higher number of unique viewers than the 5-minute video (574 vs 510), and the completion rate (the percentage of the video watched) was also higher (91% vs 65%). Student comments on the 1-minute video were very positive: comments included “I liked it a lot, very convenient”, “I liked the short time format because it made the video easily digestible” and “I liked the videos that accompanied each instruction.” No students commented that the video was too fast or difficult to follow, and no student requested narration to improve the video. The main area for improvement was requests for more detail (e.g. zooming in on the liquid nitrogen tank or showing how to set the initial impact energy).
