DesignLAB is an initiative of the School of Architecture and Landscape at the University of Sheffield.
DesignLAB promotes design approaches as valuable research tools (eg. for data collection and participatory research) that facilitate knowledge exchange and significantly contribute to impact generation. We encourage collaborations between researchers from different disciplines, stakeholders and the general public, particularly when research engages with spatial contexts.
We are interested in research across various topics and locations. For instance, we support studies on migration and camps in the Global South—often conducted by political scientists or geographers—by introducing design methods such as participatory mapping and co-design research. We support integrating design approaches into research conducted by urban scientists to enhance housing and public realm research.
Our initiative aims to foster interdisciplinary collaborations between design researchers and scholars from other disciplines, contributing to increasing the excellence in future interdisciplinary grant applications that incorporate design methodologies and design-based work packages.
actions
Stimulating and supporting large-scale interdisciplinary grant funding applications.
Researcher development (eg. disciplinary and interdisciplinary cohort training).
Collective development of identified research strengths, aligning with the Faculty of Social Sciences research strengths.
Enhancing impact of international reach and significance (where IAA and/or HEIF cannot do so).
