Once submitted, your work will be allocated to one of the module team for grading and feedback. The marking process in its entirety takes approximately four weeks. Allocation of work is random and all work is blind mark, this means the tutor does not know whose work they are marking. The only means of identification is your registration number.
We are required to randomly select 10% for second marking as a consistency mechanism, so your work may be 2nd marked for no other reason than this. Work is also automatically 2nd marked if the 1st marker refers your work to ensure the refer awarded is fair and consistent. If the markers disagree your work will then go to moderation for a final agreed mark. This could result in either a pass or a refer.
If your work is referred you will be given the opportunity to amend and resubmit. You have one resubmission per module only.
The external examiner sees all work that has been resubmitted or moderated. If your work is referred you will be notified as soon as feedback is released with instructions on what you need to do and resubmission information.
You cannot appeal against a grade you have been given because you believe it deserved better. However, if you feel there has been an administrative error or you think the university’s regulations have not been followed you should raise your concerns with the Programme Director.
The exam board sits in October each year. At this meeting, grades are confirmed (they are provisional up to this point) and passes and deferments decided upon. Participants who have submitted and passed all assignments are eligible, subject to exam board confirmation, for the award of the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education.
After submission of all work the following process will be followed:
Sep - All submitted and marked work to be prepared by the Programme Administrator and sent to the External Examiner
Oct - Exam Board convened
Oct - Letters to students Confirming that they are to be recommended for award
Nov - Award Recommendations to be sent to Taught Programmes
Dec - REQUEST YOUR CERTIFICATE - In order to request a certificate, a new web form has been created that allows recent graduates to apply for a certificate via a short form. Please be aware it can take between 10-15 working days to produce your certificate.

The external examiner receives a sample of the graded work each summer and ensures through examination of that sample that the work is of an appropriate standard, that grading decisions have been fair and consistent across the sample and that the feedback given to students has supported the learning process. We may additionally seek the advice of the external examiner during the presentation of the programme where it is appropriate. The external can make recommendations about the grading of individual work and require the programme team to make changes to the programme if the standards achieved on the programme are not deemed to be appropriate.
