Philosophy in the City (PinC) is an award-winning outreach project run entirely by students from the University of Sheffield's Philosophy Department. We aim to promote opportunities for people of any age or background to engage with philosophy. We hope to expand philosophical discussion beyond traditional education into the wider community. We go into various institutions to facilitate philosophical discussions and encourage critical thinking about philosophical problems with individuals who may not otherwise have this opportunity.
PinC volunteers go into schools and other institutions to teach philosophy and to encourage pupils and residents to think critically about philosophical problems and develop their own ideas.
We have a number of different projects to get involved with whether you are a student yourself, a teacher, or just someone who lives in Sheffield – there is something for everyone!

Since its conception in 2006 by a third-year Philosophy student, Philosophy in the City has gone from strength to strength. We have a growing amount of volunteers and projects. We have been instrumental in the University winning the Times Higher Education Awards, and our work has been presented in St Petersburg.
