The University of Sheffield is part of the Russell Group of world-class, research-intensive universities in the UK. We're a big university of 30,000 students from 150 countries, 8,000 staff, including 1,500 of the world’s leading academics. We're currently ranked as the 29th best university in Europe by QS (2025).
More than our outstanding international reputation for teaching and research, is that our student's absolutely love to study here. In 2024 alone, we were voted University of the Year in the Whatuni Student Choice Awards, retained our top spot in the Russell Group in the National Student Survey, and our student union has been voted the best in the country for the 7th year in a row!

Sheffield is wonderful city to live in. Sheffield is known as being one of the friendliest cities in the UK with a real sense of community. Our students love it here - more than 40% make Sheffield their permanent home after graduation!
This is because we enjoy a low cost of living (which makes a PhD stipend go so much further than elsewhere in the UK!), coupled with a rich cultural scene centred around a vibrant food and drink scene. Sheffield is ideal for those who love the outdoors, with more trees per person than any other city in Europe, and the Peak District being a short bus ride (<10 mins) away, giving the best of rural and city living in one place.
