Co-designing an outdoor social space at the heart of SYHA's Cuthbert Bank
June 2018 - August 2019 / Hillsborough, Sheffield / in partnership with South Yorkshire Housing Association
Cuthbert Bank provides housing for homeless families, keeping families together and providing much-needed stability in a safe and supported environment. Live Works facilitated co-design workshops with residents and support staff to develop designs for a new outdoor social space at the centre of the housing. Funded by a £10,000 grant from National Lottery Awards for All, the scheme provides a vibrant space for climbing, play, picnics and more - all within a beautiful, biodiverse landscape of pictorial meadows planting.
Detailed designs and specification were produced by the Live Works team with residents participating in the development of the scheme through two co-design workshops. The first session helped refine and agree the brief and was followed by a short period of design development. At the second session, residents gave feedback on the emerging design which was taken forward into the development of the final scheme.
Live Works produced a comprehensive detailed design and specification for SYHA and the scheme was constructed by The Green Estate CIC, with completion in summer 2019.
"It's been amazing to see the transformation of the outdoor space at Cuthbert Bank - it has been taken far beyond what I thought was possible. In the words of a customer who attended the launch event - "the garden is awesome!" Gareth Parkin, SYHA Live Well Lead
"We hope that our new outdoor space will help bring a sense of community to Cuthbert Bank, as well as improving the lives of our customers." Kingsley Hinds, SYHA Project Lead at Cuthbert Bank
