Facilitating the co-design of future community amenities to activate the new Castle Park
January - December 2025 / Castlegate, Sheffield / In partnership with the Castlegate Area Board
Live Works have facilitated the co-design of several proposed temporary amenities to activate Castle Park, the centrepiece of Sheffield City Council's Castlegate regeneration scheme, from day-one of the park's opening.
This continues a ten-year co-production process with local stakeholders, in which Live Works has brokered a collaborative relationships and helped ensure the voice of grassroots organisations in the area are included in shaping its future.
The latest design work has been produced through a series of workshops with the Castlegate Area Board's Events, Stewardship and Pioneers (ESP) working group, and proposes a 'three piece set' of interventions for the park which include an events stage and 'tower' installation over the remains of the North Tower of Sheffield Castle (Plots 4a and 4b), and a temporary 'Castle Yard' on the site of the future permanent pavilion (Plot 3).
The proposals would allow the park to host community group meetings, castle tours, educational group visits, music events and exhibitions, through the use of a 'three-piece set' of interventions. These would incorporate a variety of amenities, including:
Temporary Community Room
Covered viewing window to the remains of the North Tower of the Castle
Accessible W/C
Secure storage
Stage for music/performance events
Recent development of these proposals with the ESP group has involved discussion about creating an outdoor classroom and the potential for Live Works staff to support a Heritage Lottery Bid for £250,000 to support the activation of the park.
