Kang Lan obtained her BEng in Chemical Engineering from The National University of Singapore. She completed her PhD in Biochemical Engineering from the Jacobs University Bremen in Germany, with the highest possible grade of Special Distinction. Her PhD focused on protein engineering, especially in the development and use of directed evolution for enhancing industrial enzyme performance. She co-founded a biotech start-up, SeSaM-Biotech GmbH, in 2009. She spent 1 year as Assistant Professor in Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in China before moving to United Kingdom in 2011. During her postadoctoral research, she engineered enzymes and microorganisms for the biomanufacturing of drugs and bioplastics. She received the Global Challenges Research Fellowship from the University of Sheffield in 2019 and is now a Lecturer in the Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering (CBE) at the University of Sheffield (UK). Her research interest is in the use of enzymes and microorganisms in industrial biomanufacturing. She also authored the textbook “A Practical Guide to Protein Engineering”.
Sarah graduated with an MEng Bioengineering from the University of Sheffield in 2021. She provides research and technical support to the team.
Joe supports the daily operation of the team. His work on high-pressure fermentation contributes to the team’s research efforts in polyhydroxyalkanoate production.
Rashid was awarded the EPSRC DTP scholarship for his PhD studies in the team. He works on developing plastic recycling technology to close the loop in the circular plastics economy.
Minglong joined the team for his PhD studies and worked on the production of PHA polymers. His project focus on the use of strain engineering to control the properties of microbial PHA.
"I've been studying at Sheffield for 4 years now, having completed an MEng in Chemical Engineering. I love living in Sheffield because all the green spaces and surrounding countryside give me great places to do wildlife photography, one of my favourite pastimes along with playing the sport korfball for the University."
Laura was awarded the Faculty of Engineering University Research Scholarship for her PhD studies. She has a strong interest in using synthetic biology, microbial ecology and bioinformatics to improve industrial processes through biotechnology. Laura received her MSc at Universidad de los Andes.
Weilun received his MSc at The University of Sheffield. His interest is in chemistry and biology. His project focuses on microbial 3-HP production.
Mary was awarded the SURF studentship in 2019 for a summer research internship in our team. She characterized the performance of the OsmY secretion system for different protein candidates in E. coli. She graduated with a MEng in Chemical Engineering from the University of Sheffield in 2020 with 1st Class Honours.
Shu Khan joined the team in 2019 as a summer research student. He used subcellular fractionation to characterize protein secretion by the OsmY system in different Escherichia coli strains. He graduated with a BEng in Chemical Engineering from the University of Sheffield in 2020 with 1st Class honours.
Yi Pei was awarded the SURF studentship in 2019 for a summer research internship with the team. Her work on the development and investigation bacterial secretion system was awarded the 2nd prize for the SURF Best Student Researcher Award. She graduated with a MEng in Chemical Engineering from the University of Sheffield in 2020 with 1st Class honours.
